Behind this stuff

My name is Vicente Martínez. I am a visually impaired cartoonist creating graphic content.

Drawing is a vital necessity for me. The drawing fills and gives meaning to the life of the artist. It is a personal and spiritual choice where some lines manage to transport me further than where I can go with my eyes

I studied Fine Arts and collaborated with various fanzines driven by an early passion for drawing and comics. And I learned, thanks to continuous training and experience as a designer and illustrator, that good graphic work is better supported by a solid drawing base; and that an illustration is not just a pretty drawing, it has to communicate an intention.

But one day, the storm came. The horizon was filled with dark clouds and I found myself unable to read or properly draw on pape. It was there when an icy wind blew away any artistic desire. Although, rest assured, there is no turn of the wheel without a fresh start. I joined ONCE (Blind Spanish Organization) and finished a degree in physical therapy.

Who said fear having level crossings?

I loved this new life but I was dragging a stone in my shoe. Was there a way to get my drawing skills back to work?

In 2019 I discovered new technology that allowed me to work entirely digitally and in a completely accessible way. That’s it! I can draw again!

And what if I reinvent myself, design a new website and leave my comfort zone? It seems reckless: a cartoonist with low vision. But who does not understand the thrill of going out into the open to walk new trails, it is because he has never felt the wind of adventure on his face.

Now that you know how I learned to deal with my new situation,
would you like to know my work?
